INSTITUTE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT STUDIES SEEKS SOLUTIONS FOR LOCALIZING WOMEN'S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT IN GHANA

Accra, Ghana – The Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) in collaboration with the Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana (NETRIGHT) and Local Public Sector Alliance (LPSA) have convened a high-level workshop to address the critical issue of women’s economic empowerment in Ghana on Tuesday 13th August 2024.

The gathering brought together leading experts in gender and women's advocacy to brainstorm and develop strategies for localising women’s economic empowerment initiatives.

Participants, including renowned figures like Dr Esther Ofei-Aboagye, Prof Akosua Darkwa, Dr Rose Mensah-Kutin, Jacqueline Muthura, and others contributed their expertise to identify key challenges and opportunities for advancing women’s economic empowerment at the local level.

The workshop aimed to gather valuable insights to inform the development of a comprehensive intergovernmental policy project. Prof Nicholas Awortwi, Director of ILGS, emphasised the institute’s commitment to building the capacity of local government staff and urged participants to prioritise the most pressing challenges women face in the economic sphere. The institute plans to launch a project focused on localising women’s economic empowerment, and the workshop’s findings will be instrumental in shaping its direction.

This initiative underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between government, civil society, and academia in addressing gender inequalities and empowering women to contribute fully to Ghana’s economic growth.
