DR. AWASOM, DIRECTOR OF THE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION, NASLA, CAMEROON PAYS COURTESY CALL ON PROF. NICHOLAS AWORTWI

Dr. Awasom nee Susana Yene Chimy, the Director of the Centre for Research and Documentation at the National School of Local Administration (NASLA), Cameroon paid a courtesy call on Prof. Nicholas Awortwi, the Director of the Institute of Local Government Studies on Monday 29th January, 2024.

Her visit was to familiarise herself with Ghana’s local governance system and discuss opportunities for  collaborations with ILGS in areas of research, conferences, seminars and publications.

Prof. Awortwi in welcoming Dr. Awasom expressed his gratitude for her visit and indicated that ILGS has played key roles in shaping Ghana’s local governance system, since its existence for more than 20 years. He said ILGS was transformed from the status of a ‘capacity building project’ to an institution of higher education, professional training and research. By the enactment of Act (Act 647) ILGS is mandated to organise trainings for local government officials and other professionals.

He continued that the Institute in collaboration with key stakeholders in local governance has developed and delivered many customised senior certificate executive training programmes for several central and local government officers over the years in professional areas of local governance such as community development, district and regional development planning, physical planning, works engineering, public financial management, internal auditing and financing, human resource management etc.

Further, he indicated that ILGS offers academic programmes and has increased its number of Master’s degree programmes from 4 to 12 and introduced 4 Bachelor’s degree programmes as well.

Hence, the Institute is prepared to collaborate with NASLA in conducting joint training programmes, such as lunchtime series, conferences and seminars, research publications and joint grant proposals.

He also urged her to follow up and reactivate previous discussions that ILGS has had with the Director of NASLA .
